Evening Symposium: Intellectual Property in China

On Wednesday 24 February 2016 J A Kemp will be joined by the UK IP Attaché to China and Hong Kong in hosting a symposium on the subject of intellectual property in China, followed by a drinks reception.

Topics will include:

  • Doing business with China: Practical Tips
  • Increasing Attractiveness to Chinese Corporate Investors and Partners
  • Mitigating IP Risks in Collaborations
  • How Effective is IP in China: Can I Enforce It in Practice?
  • Patents and Trade Marks in China: When to Think About Filing and Key Differences to Watch Out For

This event also represents a unique opportunity to hear from the UK IP Attaché to China and Hong Kong, Tom Duke, who J A Kemp is honoured to welcome as a guest speaker.

Tom Duke has been the UK’s IP Attaché to China since 2011.  Based in the British Embassy in Beijing, Tom spends the majority of his time working alongside the UKTI, the British diplomatic network and UK and EU-level industry associations to support IP reforms in priority areas for UK businesses.  The rest of his time is spent providing practical IP support to British businesses.  He also attends business outreach events and publishes factsheets and a China IP newsletter.

Joining Tom in sharing their expertise in Chinese IP law and practice will be Senior Vice-President of Intralink, Jeremy Shaw, and J A Kemp Partners Amanda Simons, Tom Carver and Ben Mooneapillay.

Jeremy has lived in Asia for 21 years working in both government and private sector roles. Intralink assists foreign companies entering and developing business in North-East Asia and Jeremy managed Intralink’s Greater China, Japan and South Korea offices prior to moving into his current regional oversight role.  He was also previously head of the Intralink IPR team, which has secured licensing agreements of over $100M through non-litigious assertions.

Amanda is one of J A Kemp’s regular visitors to China and has been visiting clients and local attorneys there since 2011. A significant part of Amanda’s patent prosecution practice involves either assisting clients in the UK to secure rights in China, or working with Chinese companies on the prosecution of their patent applications. Amanda has spoken at several conferences in China on the differences between Chinese and European patent practices.

Tom lived in China for three years, where he managed intellectual property enforcement for many Western clients, including Dyson. He is named as an expert by the China IPR SME Helpdesk and his experience includes patent (design, utility and invention), trade secret, trade mark and copyright litigation against companies in provinces across China in sectors including capital and consumer goods, cosmetics and medical devices. He also has experience of non-judicial IPR enforcement in China at trade fairs, online and by Customs seizures.

Ben has almost 20 years' experience in the trade mark profession and provides the full range of contentious and non-contentious trade mark specific services, including filing, prosecution, opposition, cancellation, maintenance, search and clearance, and advises clients on infringement, passing off, enforcement, strategic issues, dispute resolution and mediation. Ben's clients include household names in the luxury goods, film, sporting equipment, food, fashion and gaming sectors, as well as SME clients in, amongst others, the pharmaceutical, retail, automotive, drinks, art, charity and trade association sectors.

Why should I attend?

Whether you are an academic, an entrepreneur, a startup, or an SME, this symposium constitutes a rare chance to gain invaluable insight into the subject of intellectual property in China and how it may relate to your specific inventions and ideas from leaders on the subject.

Attendees will have the opportunity to ask specific questions about their own IP situation, as well as learn about the benefits and challenges involved in protecting their intellectual property in China. Drinks and canapés will be provided and there will be plenty of time for networking. The event is open to all and is free to attend.
